Entry requirements:

    General Regulations Governing Admission to Higher Degree Programmes

    • Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate College on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.
    • Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate, on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • A candidate admitted to the degree of Master of University of Ibadan who obtained a weighted average mark of 55.0 – 59.9%, or a CGPA of between 4.0 and 4.9 may be offered provisional admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D programmes. Such candidates shall be assessed within three semesters of full time and four semesters of part time registration for the M.Phil/Ph.D to Ph.D conversion. This shall also apply to students who graduated from other universities    

    SPECIAL WAIVER FOR MATURED APPLICANTS

    • All University of Ibadan graduates should be admitted to Postgraduate programme with the ordinary level criteria existing at the time their first admission. Candidate who did not fulfill the requirements as at the time of their admission are not eligible for consideration.
    • Special consideration may be given to candidates, who obtained their first degree not less than 20 years from the time of seeking admission to any postgraduate programmes. Such candidates must have been found to possess special skills or abilities and professionally or academically engaged during the period of 20 years.

Our Nursing programme focuses on providing care, promoting health, preventing illness, and supporting the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. We build upon the foundational knowledge and skills obtained in undergraduate nursing programs and provide advanced education and specialization in various areas of nursing practice, leadership, education, research, and administration.

Advanced Nursing Concepts: 

  • Our students further develop their understanding of nursing theories, concepts, and models that guide advanced nursing practice. They explore topics such as health promotion, disease prevention, ethical considerations, cultural competency, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement in healthcare.

Advanced Health Assessment: 

  • Courses in advanced health assessment focus on refining our students' skills in conducting comprehensive health assessments, including physical examination, history-taking, and diagnostic reasoning. Students learn to critically analyze assessment findings, identify health risks, and formulate appropriate nursing interventions.

Advanced Pharmacology: 

  • Students study advanced pharmacology to expand their knowledge of medications, including their actions, interactions, side effects, and implications for nursing practice. They learn to assess medication regimens, monitor drug responses, and provide patient education regarding safe and effective medication use.

Advanced Pathophysiology: 

  • Courses in advanced pathophysiology delve into the study of the physiological changes that occur in various disease processes. Our students learn to recognize and understand the underlying mechanisms of diseases, their manifestations, and the implications for nursing care and interventions.

Advanced Nursing Practice: 

  • We offer specialized tracks and concentrations in advanced nursing practice areas such as Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. These programs provide in-depth knowledge and clinical skills specific to the chosen specialization, preparing students for advanced practice roles.

Leadership and Management in Nursing: 

  • Courses in leadership and management focus on developing students' abilities to lead healthcare teams, manage resources, facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, and implement evidence-based practices. Students learn about healthcare policy, organizational behavior, healthcare economics, and ethical considerations in nursing leadership and management.

Research in Nursing: 

  • Students gain knowledge and skills in research methodologies, data analysis, and evidence-based practice. They learn to critically appraise research studies, design and conduct their own research projects, and apply research findings to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: 

  • Courses in health promotion and disease prevention emphasize the role of nurses in promoting wellness and preventing illness across the lifespan. Students learn strategies for health education, health behavior change, and community-based interventions to address public health challenges.

Ethics and Legal Issues in Nursing: 

  • Students explore ethical and legal considerations in nursing practice, including patient autonomy, confidentiality, informed consent, and ethical decision-making. They study the legal frameworks that govern nursing practice and healthcare delivery and learn to navigate ethical dilemmas in their professional roles.

Clinical Practicum and/or Residency: 

  • Higher degree programs often include clinical practicum experiences or residency programs, where students apply their knowledge and skills in real-world healthcare settings. These experiences provide opportunities to work alongside experienced healthcare professionals, refine clinical competencies, and gain hands-on experience in the chosen nursing specialization.
