    General Regulations Governing Admission to Higher Degree Programmes

    1. Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate College on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    2. Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.
    3. Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate, on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    4. A candidate admitted to the degree of Master of the University of Ibadan who obtained a weighted average mark of 55.0 – 59.9%, or a CGPA of between 4.0 and 4.9 may be offered provisional admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D programmes. Such candidates shall be assessed within three semesters of full time and four semesters of part time registration for the M.Phil/Ph.D to Ph.D conversion. This shall also apply to students who graduated from other universities    

    SPECIAL WAIVER FOR MATURED APPLICANTS

    1. All University of Ibadan graduates should be admitted to Postgraduate programme with the ordinary level criteria existing at the time their first admission. Candidate who did not fulfill the requirements as at the time of their admission are not eligible for consideration.
    2. Special consideration may be given to candidates, who obtained their first degree not less than 20 years from the time of seeking admission to any postgraduate programmes. Such candidates must have been found to possess special skills or abilities and professionally or academically engaged during the period of 20 years.

Our Law programme focuses on the legal system, principles, and regulations that govern society. We study the legal theory, legal frameworks, and the practical application of law in various contexts. Here is a general summary of the course overview for law:

Legal Foundations: 

  • This course introduces students to the basic principles and concepts of law. It covers topics such as legal theory, legal reasoning, legal ethics, and the sources of law. Students learn how laws are created, interpreted, and enforced.

Constitutional Law: 

  • This course focuses on the study of constitutional principles, including the structure and powers of government, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the relationship between the state and individuals. It examines constitutional doctrines and landmark court cases that have shaped constitutional interpretation.

Criminal Law: 

  • This course explores the principles and concepts of criminal law, including the elements of crimes, defenses, and the criminal justice system. Students learn about different types of offenses, the elements required for conviction, and the procedures involved in criminal prosecutions.

Contract Law: 

  • Contract law deals with the formation, interpretation, and enforcement of contracts. Students learn about the essential elements of a contract, contract formation, terms of a contract, breach of contract, and remedies for breach.

Tort Law:

  • Tort law focuses on civil wrongs and the legal remedies available to compensate for harm caused by wrongful conduct. It covers topics such as negligence, intentional torts, strict liability, and the principles of liability and damages.

Property Law: 

  • Property law examines the legal principles governing ownership, transfer, and use of property. It covers topics such as real property, personal property, intellectual property, and the rights and responsibilities of property owners.

Administrative Law: 

  • This course explores the legal principles that govern the actions and decision-making of administrative agencies. It covers topics such as the scope of administrative powers, procedures for administrative decision-making, and judicial review of administrative actions.

International Law: 

  • International law focuses on the legal principles and rules that govern relations between states and other international actors. It covers topics such as international treaties, human rights law, international humanitarian law, and the resolution of international disputes.

Legal Research and Writing: 

  • This course develops students' skills in legal research and writing. Students learn how to conduct legal research using primary and secondary legal sources, analyze legal issues, and present their findings in a clear and persuasive manner.

Electives and Specializations: 

  • Law programs often offer a range of elective courses and opportunities for specialization in specific areas of law. This allows students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. Some common areas of specialization include corporate law, environmental law, intellectual property law, family law, and human rights law.

Professor Simisola Akintola (Ph.D),

Professor of Bioethics and Health Law

Professor Simisola Akintola (Ph.D), is a professor of Bioethics and Health Law at the Faculty of Law University of Ibadan. She is also a Faculty Member at the Centre for Bioethics, Akobo, Ibadan. Her research is motivated by the yawning gap between technology, medical science and the existing regulatory framework. Professor Akintola is involved in the advancement of knowledge in healthcare system and regulation. She has several peer-reviewed articles published in both local and international journals of repute. She participated in the development of the National Health Ethics Code for Nigeria, the Intellectual Property Policy of her institution and other policies within the institution and outside. She also served on the institutional review board of her university and the teaching hospital for years. Consistent in her research is the consideration of the peculiarity of the environment and people she advocates for.
