Entry requirements:

    General Regulations Governing Admission to Higher Degree Programmes

    • Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate College on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.
    • Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate, on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • A candidate admitted to the degree of Master of University of Ibadan who obtained a weighted average mark of 55.0 – 59.9%, or a CGPA of between 4.0 and 4.9 may be offered provisional admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D programmes. Such candidates shall be assessed within three semesters of full time and four semesters of part time registration for the M.Phil/Ph.D to Ph.D conversion. This shall also apply to students who graduated from other universities

    SPECIAL WAIVER FOR MATURED APPLICANTS

    • All University of Ibadan graduates should be admitted to Postgraduate programme with the ordinary level criteria existing at the time their first admission. Candidate who did not fulfill the requirements as at the time of their admission are not eligible for consideration.
    • Special consideration may be given to candidates, who obtained their first degree not less than 20 years from the time of seeking admission to any postgraduate programmes. Such candidates must have been found to possess special skills or abilities and professionally or academically engaged during the period of 20 years.

Our English Postgraduate Programme is a diverse field of study that encompasses the English language, literature, linguistics, and communication. Here is a general overview of the course:

Writing and Communication: 

  • This component emphasizes effective written and oral communication skills. Students learn different writing styles, techniques, and genres, such as academic writing, creative writing, and professional communication. They develop skills in research, analysis, argumentation, and presentation.

Literary Theory and Criticism: 

  • Students delve into various theoretical approaches and critical perspectives used to analyze and interpret literary works. They explore different schools of literary theory, such as structuralism, post-structuralism, feminism, postcolonialism, and cultural studies.

Cultural and Media Studies:

  • This area focuses on the analysis of cultural artifacts, media texts, and popular culture. Students examine how language, literature, and media shape and reflect societal values, beliefs, and ideologies. They explore topics like film studies, media analysis, cultural studies, and intercultural communication.

Professional and Technical Writing: 

  • This specialization prepares students for careers in writing for various professional contexts. They learn to create documents such as reports, proposals, technical manuals, and business communications. They develop skills in editing, document design, and effective communication in the workplace.

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): 

  • This specialization focuses on teaching English to non-native speakers. Students learn about second language acquisition theories, pedagogical approaches, curriculum development, and assessment strategies. They develop the skills to teach English in diverse settings, such as schools, language institutes, or international organizations.

Aderemi Raji-Oyelade

Professor of English

Aderemi Raji-Oyelade is a professor in the Department of English, University of Ibadan. His research and publications cut across the Literature of the African Diaspora, Cultural Studies and Digital Humanities. He is author of seven books of poetry and the seminal book on the theory of postproverbials in African languages and societies – Playful Blasphemies: Postproverbials as Archetypes of Modernity in Yoruba Culture (Trier, 2012; Ibadan, 2022). 

Raji-Oyelade has been a multiple winner of literary/academic prizes including the ANA/Cadbury Prize, the Ford Foundation Research Grant, the West African Research Council Prize, the Harry Oppenheimer Award, the prestigious Humboldt Alumni Award for Innovative Networking Initiatives, the European Commission's Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching Award, and the Humboldt Talent Travel Award. He is a member of the University of Ibadan Research Foundation, and the Coordinator of a multi-site, pan-African research project on the theory and practices of postproverbials in Africa.
