Entry requirements:

    General Regulations Governing Admission to Higher Degree Programmes

    • Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate College on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.
    • Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate, on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • A candidate admitted to the degree of Master of University of Ibadan who obtained a weighted average mark of 55.0 – 59.9%, or a CGPA of between 4.0 and 4.9 may be offered provisional admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D programmes. Such candidates shall be assessed within three semesters of full time and four semesters of part time registration for the M.Phil/Ph.D to Ph.D conversion. This shall also apply to students who graduated from other universities    

    SPECIAL WAIVER FOR MATURED APPLICANTS

    • All University of Ibadan graduates should be admitted to Postgraduate programme with the ordinary level criteria existing at the time their first admission. Candidate who did not fulfill the requirements as at the time of their admission are not eligible for consideration.
    • Special consideration may be given to candidates, who obtained their first degree not less than 20 years from the time of seeking admission to any postgraduate programmes. Such candidates must have been found to possess special skills or abilities and professionally or academically engaged during the period of 20 years.

Our Community Medicine program, is a discipline that focuses on promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of communities. The course combines principles of medicine, epidemiology, social sciences, and public health to address health issues at a population level. 

Epidemiology:

  • Students learn about the principles and methods of epidemiology, which involves studying patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease in populations. They learn to analyze data, design and conduct research studies, and interpret epidemiological findings to understand disease distribution and risk factors.

Biostatistics: 

  • This area focuses on the application of statistical methods in public health research and analysis. Students learn statistical concepts, data collection techniques, and data analysis methods used in public health studies. They learn to analyze health-related data, interpret statistical results, and make evidence-based decisions.

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: 

  • Students study strategies and interventions aimed at promoting health and preventing diseases at the community level. They learn about health education, behavior change theories, health communication, and community mobilization techniques. They explore the role of public health campaigns, policy development, and community-based interventions in improving population health.

Environmental Health: 

  • This area focuses on the impact of environmental factors on health. Students learn about environmental risk assessment, water and air quality, occupational health, and sanitation. They study the relationship between environmental exposures and various health outcomes and learn strategies to prevent and mitigate environmental health hazards.

Maternal and Child Health: 

  • Students learn about the health issues affecting mothers, infants, and children. They study topics such as prenatal care, child development, vaccination programs, nutrition, and reproductive health. They explore strategies to improve maternal and child health outcomes, reduce infant mortality, and promote healthy child growth and development.

Health Policy and Management: 

  • This area focuses on the policy and management aspects of public health. Students learn about health systems, health policy development, health economics, healthcare financing, and health services management. They explore the role of government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations in shaping health policies and managing public health programs.

Global Health: 

  • Students gain an understanding of global health challenges and disparities. They study global health trends, infectious diseases, emerging pandemics, and health issues in low-resource settings. They learn about global health governance, international health organizations, and strategies to address global health inequalities.

Epidemiology of Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases: 

  • Students delve into the epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases, including infectious diseases, chronic diseases, and lifestyle-related conditions. They study disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, disease prevention strategies, and the impact of social determinants of health on disease patterns.

Community Diagnosis and Needs Assessment: 

  • Students learn how to assess the health needs of communities through community diagnosis and needs assessment. They learn participatory research methods, community engagement techniques, and data collection tools to identify health priorities, understand community resources, and plan effective interventions.

Research Methods and Data Analysis: 

  • Students develop research skills and learn various research methods and data analysis techniques used in public health studies. They learn to design research studies, collect and analyze data, interpret findings, and communicate research results effectively.

Public Health Officer:
